Adolescencia Libre de Móviles (ALM) launches a web pact to recruit as many families as possible willing to delay the introduction of smartphones into their children's lives.
Who are we?
ALM is made up of thousands of families concerned about the relationship of our children and adolescents with smartphones and social networks, a technology that puts the internet at their fingertips at any time and place, affecting their sociability, learning, concentration, sleep, and self-esteem, in addition to favoring access to inappropriate content for their age, cyberbullying, and leading to addictive behaviors.
What are we looking for?
Many families have given their children a smartphone so that they wouldn't be the only ones without one. We want to change this social pressure and for that we need to support each other collectively to delay the age at which we give them a smartphone.
We propose you to join this pact that we make as families. It is in our hands to reduce the social pressure they suffer and change that unwritten rule that has led us to give this device generally at the beginning of high school.
Are we exaggerating?
In December 2024, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics updated its recommendations by age for screen use:
13-16 years: less than 2 hours of screen time per day, including school time and homework. Prioritize phones without internet access and delay the age of the first smartphone.
7-12 years: less than 1 hour of screen time per day, including school time and homework.
0-6 years: 0 screens, there is no safe time for use.
How does the pact work?
1. Fill out the pact for each of your children.
2. By doing so, you commit to delaying the delivery of the first smartphone, ideally, until the age of 16. This commitment will be annual and will automatically renew unless you request to unsubscribe from the pact.
3. The information will be treated anonymously and the results by areas, schools, and grades will be shared to know the number of families adhering to the pact and thus reduce social pressure.
